Organiza a tus invitados en las mesas de tu boda / Organize your guests on your wedding tables

Currently it depends on the couple if they want to follow protocol or prefer a more casual meal. Usually the guests have to accept the place you have selected for them. This place depends on the relationship you have with the hosts. Family, friend, family of the bride and the groom… location varies depending on who is involved.

The first thing to be defined is whether they want to follow the protocol or not. Today we show you the different seating protocols that exist and the place that should be occupied by each guest and their respective companions.

How to organize the guests depending on the protocol?

Many times we have had to deal with this difficult task of placing each guest in the proper place. It is a tedious task for the wedding planner as required to sit for a couple of hours with the couple to find out the connection which each guest and so assign a chair or another. Locate the guests at the table requires much coordination as well as for the hosts as by us.

The location of each guest at a table is governed by a set of rules called     «Presidency» and whether or not to follow it to the letter depends on the formality of the wedding. These standards are used in any event, they are not exclusive to weddings, so once learned they may be implemented in any kind of dinner or formal lunch.

Guests are placed depending on importance, rank, age or hierarchy always based on the hosts of the wedding.

Types of tables for wedding reception

There are five types of tables for different events. The choice of one or the other will depend on the space that you have to accommodate your guests. Below we show the round table, square, rectangular and two kinds of oval table:

These tables can be grouped as you like while taking into account the table of the couple and the space that you have:

The placement and orientation of the tables may vary depending on several factors such as sun and shade in outdoor farmhouses, the dance floor, the location of the building, door, windows of the room, if space is rectangular, «L», square… but will always be placed according to the presidential table. This table is where the bride and groom, groomsmen, bridesmaids sit

Presidential table of the couple

As we will see in the photo, the main table always will be the point of interest of all guests. This means that by organizing the other tables we have to be aware that all guests should be able to see the couple from their seat without having to move. We know that it is not possible for everyone to face the couple but even those whose back is turned to the couple, should be able to turn without having to leave their seat. Here you have several types of organization depending on the head table, remember that this table must always be facing the door in the opposite direction of the room, that is, as you enter the room at the back you see it from the front.

A site for each guest

In Europe there are two types of presidencies: The English and French.

The presidency is a table for the hosts, that is, Those who preside or organize the banquet. If it is a family banquet, the person chairing the table is normally the older guest, as grandparents or parents, even if is another person who organizes the event. For weddings, it is always the newlyweds who preside over the table.

Presidencia Inglesa

English presidence

The hosts are at the end of the table. That is, the groom in a corner opposite to the bride. This system is not the most used at weddings because the newly married often want to sit next to each other. The arrangement of the other guests will be clockwise as seen in the image below.

The top row will be for bridesmaids and groomsmen witnesses and relatives of the couple.

Presidencia Francesa

French presidence

The hosts are in the middle of the table. That is, the groom facing the bride at the centre of the table. The arrangement of the other guests will be clockwise as seen in the image below. The top row will be for bridesmaids and groomsmen witnesses and relatives of the couple.

Placing of the couple at the banquet

The orientation of the couple at the banquet is usually always facing the door or access to the venue, never facing away from the main entrance.

It is important to consider when making the guest list, to invite the same number of women as men if possible and if these are pairs, even better. Although we know that this may not always be so, if some guests are alone they should be interspersed between men and women as far as possible.

One trick that we usually use is to place small cards with the name of each guest over the plate or on chairs. It is a way to facilitate the guests location and save time. This is typically used especially in round or oval tables where the president is not so clear and so with little cards the guests will not feel so disoriented when entering the banquet. Once all the guests have entered the room, the ladies of the group are first to be seated, if there are no waiting staff nearby we can draw the chairs back to assist them in sitting down. Our preferred tables are rectangular and very long. We leave you some decorations and organization of our wedding tables.
